Definition of "Jurisdiction"
- Generally, the power, right, or authority to interpret, apply, and declare the law.
- In respect to courts, jurisdiction refers to the authority of the court to interpret and apply certain laws with respect to a specific matter in a specific territorial area.
- In respect to contracts, jurisdiction is a geographical and political territory that has its own laws. It is a territory with boundaries, such as a state or a province. For example, California is a jurisdiction in the United States, Ontario is a jurisdiction in Canada, Scotland is a jurisdiction in the United Kingdom, and Queensland is a jurisdiction in Australia.
